3d HRSC and 398th FMSU Settle in at Camp Arifjan

By Sgt. Connie Jones | 184th Sustainment Command | May 14, 2019

CAMP ARIFJAN, KUWAIT --

It’s not every day that company-sized elements pick up and move from one camp to another during an overseas rotation. But this wasn’t a pick up and move, and these aren’t regular companies.

398th Financial Management Support Center (FMSU) and 3d Human Resources Sustainment Center (3d HRSC) recently relocated from Camp As Sayliyah (CAS), Qatar, to Camp Arifjan, Kuwait.

“The main purpose for the move was to consolidate 1st Theater Sustainment Command (1st TSC) assets to Camp Arifjan, and we’re a direct asset to the 1st TSC as well as the FMSU,” said Col. Gregory Toth, 3d HRSC director. The

The two centers were in Qatar for the first four months of their rotation.

“We got in country around the first of October. It was almost like a 50/50 split between locations,” said Capt. Matthew Harmon, policy and plans officer for 398th FMSU. “We were pretty much at the half way point.”

The move occurring at the time it did brought a welcomed change for the units. The centers "have been at Camp AJ for just over a month and the transition has been running smoothly so far, said Sgt. Maj. Terri Ussery-Hendrieth, 3d HRSC.

“It’s going really well. We’ve made strides and accomplish quite a bit, especially at CAS, to include the relocation. It has been successful. We are fully operational and the Soldiers are adjusting well.”

During their move, they had to continue to fulfill their mission at Qatar while setting up shop in Kuwait, said Toth.

“When we moved, we had to maintain connectivity and 100 percent accountability. We had to move very deliberately,” he said. “We had to make sure that once we left CAS, we were never down; we always had to be operational throughout so we had to maintain almost two footprints for about a week until I could dislodge the final trail party at CAS and we were able to perform all of our functions from this location. We had fantastic planners and fantastic Soldiers carry that out.”

The 3d Human Resources Sustainment Center, U.S. Army Reserve, is based in Jackson, Miss., and the 398th Financial Management Support Center, U.S. Army Reserve, is based in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
